If you are interested in economics and business, you likely have at the very least looked into marketing.

Marketing in business refers to the prospect of advertising your products and/or services. It is quite possibly the most important part of getting your business out there, since it leads to hundreds of possible consumers learning of and maybe getting interested in whatever your business has to offer. Almost every legitimate business utilizes marketing to some extent or the other.

Fast food chains, such as Taco Bell or In n Out, use YouTube ads or signs on the sidewalk to promote limited time deals or new entries in their menu. Movie producers use billboards, video ads, social media posts, and signs positioned near benches or sidewalk seats to advertise their movies and where to see them. These utilities all lead to their products getting more exposure to possible customers, which in turn helps the companies make more money.

There are dozens of different types of marketing techniques.

Virtual ads are very popular in this day and age, such as Youtube ads, popups on various websites, and more. Social media is another massive form of marketing. Many movies and concerts are advertised through posts on Facebook, Snapchat, and other social media platforms.

More traditional forms of marketing, such as billboards, signs on sidewalk benches, and more are used less often, but are still employed to promote various products and services. Because of these varying forms of advertising, the field of marketing actually has many more job varieties than one might think.

While the field of marketing may seem straightforward and not too complicated, there are actually dozens of different jobs and positions one can earn, all with different responsibilities and prospects.

Jobs in the field

These jobs include market researchers, social media managers, graphic designers, and more. Some of the more intensive and high-level jobs also come with higher salaries. Marketing employees can earn upwards of $100,000 yearly, with many higher-level executives and managers breaking through $150,000 to even $200,000.

So how does one get a job in the field of marketing? There are several different steps you could take to begin a career in this field.

Getting an MBA, or Master of Business Administration degree, in college looks very impressive and highlights your interest, skill, and proficiency in the field of business, which translates to marketing, finance, accounting, and many other career choices.

Studying math, digital graphics design, and/or economics in college is another step, since all of these play a major role in many if not all marketing jobs. Other options include internships, summer programs, and more.

The field of business is generally quite experience-oriented, so if you can put any past experience, whether that is through an internship or even a possible past job, it will help your resumé look much more appealing if you are looking to go into marketing.

Different certificates or degrees earned in college also help boost your chances of securing a job in the marketing department of a company, so you could always consider dedicating yourself in college to earning an MBA or other similar degree, though keep in mind that college degrees could take years to earn and could possibly interfere with any other interests you might be looking to explore in college. However, if you really want a business career of any type, then college degrees will help greatly.

To summarize, marketing has the potential to be a very lucrative and unique line of work, with various different job opportunities and forms of work.

Not only is it a very wide field of work that companies rely on, but it also is relatively straightforward to enter and succeed it, provided one is motivated and has the means to do so.
